Company - History
Originated in Germany
The roots of SCR-Tech go back to Germany in the mid-1990s, when one of the original founders, ENVICA GmbH, created a method for cleaning, rejuvenating and regenerating SCR catalyst. Meanwhile, the third largest energy company in Germany, EnBW, was independently developing an innovative in-situ cleaning and rejuvenation process. Since 1995, these commercial technologies have been successfully applied throughout Germany.
In 1997, ENVICA partnered with one of Germany's largest utilities, Hamburgische Electricitätswerke AG (HEW), and worked in cooperation with E.ON Engineering, a subsidiary of E.ON AG the world's most experienced SCR operator, to begin developing an off-site regeneration process. Development was based on ENVICA’s core technology, which not only physically cleans but also chemically regenerates SCR catalyst. Successful test results led to the decision to jointly market SCR catalyst regeneration services to other SCR plant operators in Germany, and to the construction of the world's first full-scale commercial SCR catalyst regenerating facility. The resulting regeneration process is marketed in Germany by ENVICA under the ENVICA Kat name. Both HEW and EnBW continue to use ENVICA's regeneration processes in their coal-fired plants throughout Germany.
Partnership for Expansion
In March 2001, ENVICA and Energy & Environmental Consultants GmbH (E&EC), a German consulting company, formed SCR-Tech GmbH for marketing the regeneration process worldwide. In March 2002, EnBW Energy Solutions GmbH became a shareholder of SCR-Tech GmbH, along with the two founders, ENVICA and E&EC. EnBW Energy Solutions then granted SCR-Tech an exclusive license for its proprietary and patented in-situ cleaning process (independently developed in 1995).
North American Operations
Meanwhile, in May 2001, SCR-Tech GmbH formed SCR-Tech LLC for marketing the process in North America. SCR-Tech subsequently initiated commercial operations in its Charlotte, North Carolina regeneration facility in early 2003.
Acquisition by Catalytica Energy Systems, Inc.
In February 2004, SCR-Tech LLC was acquired by and, today, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Catalytica Energy Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CESI), a provider of innovative products and services for clean energy production.
Upon the acquisition of SCR-Tech LLC by Catalytica Energy Systems, Werner Götz, managing director of EnBW Energy Solutions, one of SCR-Tech's former owners, said, “We took an ownership interest in SCR-Tech based on the great promise of its technologies and the overwhelmingly positive response to its innovative regeneration process throughout Germany. While in 2003, EnBW realigned its strategic focus and consequently decided to divest non-core and overseas investments, we continue to hold SCR-Tech’s technologies in very high regard and see significant opportunities for its offerings in the North American marketplace.”
Acquisition by Acorn Factor, Inc.
In November 2007, SCR-Tech LLC was acquired by Acorn Factor, Inc. and now operates as part of CoaLogixTM, a wholly owned subdidiary of Acorn Factor.
